Forest Mentor

Organization
Davis Forest School
Job Description

Prior experience working in a similar setting with children is preferred, but not required. Knowledge of CPR and/or wilderness first aid is also preferred but not required (we can provide an opportunity to become certified). An understanding of, or willingness to learn, the ideas and philosophies behind Forest School programs is requested. Familiarity with books such as Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature, Sharing the Joy of Nature, and Last Child in the Woods (among others!) is a good place to start. Ideally, we are looking for candidates with any relevant special skills or interests that we can incorporate into our youth programming (examples include earth skills, birding, animal tracking experience, nature arts and crafts, etc. – even if you aren’t sure if your skills/interests are relevant, we would love to hear about it!). Being a Forest Mentor is a great job for a university student studying in the realms of ecology, environmental studies, or child development (though we are open to anyone regardless of educational field!). It's also a great position for a parent who feels passionate about helping their child/ren and their peers connect with nature. Many of our Forest Mentors have had their own kids in the program at the same time, so that is always an option. The position of Forest Mentor requires the ability to stand, walk on uneven ground, bend, and to carry up to 20 lbs. You must be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures. If you are interested, please send a resume and cover letter (detailing your prior experience with and/or passion for helping kids connect with nature) to natascha@davisforestschool.org. We will be reviewing applications as we receive them, so the sooner the better!
