Student Spotlight- Alma Wilcox
My name is Alma, I am a second-year student in EPM set to graduate in June. I am originally from Tucson, Arizona but completed my B.S. in Louisville, Kentucky at Bellarmine University. I came to Davis knowing that I wanted to work in a field related to sustainable food systems but surprised myself with how much I love working in agriculture.
What has been your favorite class so far?
My favorite class so far is one that I am currently in, GEL230 - Geomorphology and River Management, which is a multi-disciplinary class with a group of graduate and Ph.D. students from a variety of different programs where we look at all of the environmental complexities encompassing the Grand Canyon. The best part of this course is at the end of the quarter when we spend two weeks rafting and camping in the National Park!
Do you participate in any student groups, if so which ones?
I am currently the Social Coordinator for the EPM chapter of the Association of Environmental Professionals (AEP) and I am a Lead Student Farmer at the UCD Ecological Garden.
What are your career goals?
My career goals are to work with an organization involved with local food systems policy and community outreach. My ideal job would be working outside and working directly with communities to coordinate or manage projects that promote local/regional food access and environmental justice objectives via policy and research.
Do you have any advice for prospective students?
Take as many different electives as possible. Davis has so many awesome classes and opportunities to learn something completely new and out of your element. Also, the Art Center Classes are awesome (and free with a waiver)!
Please share a fun fact about yourself!
I got really into crafting this year, like all kinds of crafting. But my favorite de-stress activity is drilling rocks that I find on my hikes and making them into necklaces for my friends/family. Definitely stoked to have more time to do crafting post-graduation!
