Job Description

Help the campus reach its Zero Waste goals and learn more about sustainability. Zero Waste Coordinators work in the UC Davis Sustainability office, and will have the opportunity to develop and implement waste reduction outreach and education programs, collect and analyze data and materials from the campus waste stream, and offer general support to the office through some administrative work. Zero Waste Coordinators will drive University vehicles if required by the assigned project.

Job Duties:

• Inspect and analyze campus-wide waste stream and infrastructure for waste reduction and diversion recommendations

• Coordinate and pick up specific recyclable materials from campus departments throughout the week

• Attend and staff campus events (such as farmers markets, football games, and other tabling events) as a Zero Waste assistant/guide

• Conduct research on campus waste system (which can include handling waste during waste audits in outdoor settings)

• Prepare and present educational materials to promote campus waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting

• Respond to telephone and email requests for information

• Attend weekly staff meetings and meetings with other campus departments for specific projects

• Coordinate and deliver indoor waste bin orders

• Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Work Schedule:

This position is listed as Student III, at an expected rate of $16.25/hour. The position will commence as soon as possible in spring/summer 2024 and continue through September 2025, with possibility of extension. Flexible during regular school/office hours, 10-12 hours/week desired, with some weekend shifts during special events.

Required Qualifications:

• Registered UC Davis student

• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and the Internet.

• Strong writing skills for a variety of correspondence formats, such as reports, policies, and emails

• Research abilities and familiarization with different research methods

• Strong interpersonal skills to clearly and effectively communicate to diverse audiences

• Interest in or knowledge of issues surrounding waste minimization, sustainability challenges, or resource management in a higher education setting.

• Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision

• Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative information

• Ability to identify and evaluate problems and possible alternatives

• Ability to organize work effectively to meet deadlines on simultaneous projects

• Willingness to work some weekend and evening shifts for special zero waste events

• Willingness to work outdoors handling waste during waste audits

• Willingness to perform various office-related (non-sustainability) tasks, including photocopying, typing, and returning correspondence

• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice Program.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to maneuver van/truck type vehicles

• Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 25 pounds

• Must be able to lift, stand and sit for extended periods of time

Preferred Qualifications:

• Second or third year student

• Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Canva
