The City of Mission Viejo is accepting applications for the position of Intern from qualified applicants. There is one (1) vacancy within the Community Development Department located inside City Hall.
Interns are considered at-will Hourly, Seasonal, and/or Temporary variable hour employees, and are not a part of the competitive service. An internship is a temporary position that does not lead to regular City employment.
Incumbents will work a flexible schedule, with an average of 10 to 20 hours per week, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during the assignment through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th. Scheduled hours will be between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the City and the availability of the intern. The eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used by the City to fill future Intern vacancies.
Internships with the City of Mission Viejo offer college students an array of opportunities that complement academic studies, enhance career growth, and foster personal development. Interns assist managers and professional staff with special projects, research and analytical assignments, client/constituent services, community outreach, technical/scientific support, and day-to-day program activities.
The Community Development Department administers the City’s land use policies, including zoning, building, subdivision and environmental regulations, to ensure the orderly physical growth of the City. Program activities range from advance and current planning to permit inspection, code enforcement, and economic development.
Interns will be able to shadow City staff at the public counter and in various meetings with the public. Interns will also actively participate in the development review process, including conducting a preliminary review of applications, reviewing and answering public inquiries, and attending meetings with applicants and staff.
