Staff Spotlight- Jessica Chalfin
Hi everyone, you can call me Jessica, Jess, or JC! I'm originally from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, but relocated for school. I studied Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology here at UC Davis and I'm so glad to be back working at my alma mater! I worked closely with the WFCB advising department as a student and after graduation, and I'm thrilled to be working closely again with students in a similar field. I developed a love for the environment at an early age and I am a strong supporter of conservation and using policy to enact change!
In what ways do you interact with the students?
As the Graduate Program Coordinator, I’m here to help guide students through their entire graduate career at UC Davis. This means speaking with undergraduates who are unsure about grad school, and connecting students with faculty and professors to gain internships. I also work closely with the EPM Social Committee to plan fun community events and bring students closer together! I’m here to create a safe and welcoming environment for students throughout their academic careers and set a strong foundation for their life outside of the EPM program.
What do you look forward to accomplishing in this position?
I look forward to connecting with a diverse group of environmental- focused students. I come from a similar educational background, Wildlife & Fisheries, and I find it inspiring to work with like-minded individuals. I hope to provide students with opportunities to register for classes they are interested in, accept internships that align with their goals, and connect students to careers after graduation. I am also looking forward to engaging in conversations about different perspectives on current environmental issues.
What is your favorite thing about UC Davis?
I love the cows on campus! I was an undergrad here at UC Davis and lived in the dorms right across from the dairy barn. I woke up every day with cows as my neighbors, and it is still one of my favorite places to visit on campus. I was a calf feeding volunteer, which was one of the most entertaining experiences!
What stands out to you about the EPM program?
The EPM program is amazing in ways that it connects students to professionals in the field. The Professional Development Seminar and Policy Clinic are great opportunities for our students to explore potential careers. We also have a large group of faculty advisors that work closely with our students as mentors and guides to the professional world outside of academia. I also love the sense of community within EPM. Many students make lifelong connections with friends and professionals that they'll carry on through the future.
What is a fun fact about you?
I have worked with threatened species like green sturgeon and have tagged/handled white sturgeon that weigh more than me! I also am a bird nerd and have two avian roommates at home. If you ever see cool birds, don't forget to show me photos! :)
