UC Davis Environmental Policy and Management Program Hosts Annual Open House

Quick Summary

  • Each year, the Environmental Policy and Management (EPM) program at UC Davis welcomes prospective students to campus to showcase the program and campus

Each year, the Environmental Policy and Management (EPM) program at UC Davis welcomes prospective students to campus to showcase the program and campus. The Open House traditionally begins with an excursion to Sacramento, highlighting the strategic advantage of Davis's proximity to California's capital and the opportunities for students to get involved in cutting-edge environmental work.

This year's event commenced with a visit to the California Council on Science and Technology, where Director of Science Services, Eric Chu and Manager of Science Services, John Thompson hosted our prospective students for an informative panel discussion. The panelists offered wonderful advice for students pursuing a career in policy-- including the importance of networking with professionals doing the work on the ground.

Following the panel, the group proceeded to the State Capitol for a guided tour led by EPM Instructor David Bunn, who teaches ENV 202: Policy Implementation and Development—a foundational course in the program's curriculum. Professor Bunn brings considerable expertise to the program, having previously served as Vice Provost at UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, Director of the EPM program, and Director of the California Department of Conservation.

After returning to campus, participants enjoyed lunch followed by a comprehensive program presentation that emphasized the core benefits of the EPM program:

  • Proximity to pioneering environmental policy work in areas such as renewable energy, emissions reductions and conservation efforts
  • Access to extensive professional networks
  • World-class faculty located in 8+ departments across campus
  • Small cohort sizes of about 30 students
  • Dedicated mentorship program

The event was enriched by the participation of program alumni, including Jessica DellaRossa (Class of 2023), Thomas McNairn (Class of 2023), Thomas Miller (Class of 2023), and Nick Carter (Class of 2021). The alums spoke about how they use the skills they developed in the program in their everyday work and both their favorite and least favorite things about their graduate school experience. A faculty panel featuring Dr. Mark Schwartz and Dr. Tyler Scott provided additional insights into the academic experience and how faculty engage with EPM students. The day concluded with a networking reception at Gunrock's Pub, where prospective students connected with current students, staff, and faculty in an informal setting.

We are hope that our Open House provided prospective students with a clear vision of their potential trajectory at UC Davis. We look forward to welcoming the incoming class later this fall!
