Fall Quarter Highlights: Connecting and Networking

Fall quarter has been off to a busy start! The Graduate Program of Environmental Policy and Management (EPM) works in collaboration with three student committees to host a range of events to cultivate community, foster meaningful connections and help new students as they transition to UC Davis.

Networking Opportunities

In late September, EPM hosted its annual fall mixer, bringing together a record number of 77 students, faculty, staff, alumni and local environmental professionals for an evening of relaxed, low-pressure networking complete with pizza. Program staff hosting the event got creative this year and adapted a game of bingo as an icebreaker to encourage attendees to get out of their comfort zone and start conversations. The game gave everyone a fun reason to introduce themselves, discover common interests and find unexpected connections while competing for prizes!

The networking momentum doesn't stop there! The Association of Environmental Professions at UC Davis, a student organization supported by the EPM program, is hosting another exciting networking event and panel next Thursday, 11/6 from 5:30-7pm in Walker Hall. The event "Abundance in the Age of Constraint" will feature guest speakers including Dr. Sydney Vergis, Assistant Division Chief at California Air Resources Board, Jason Kenney, Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of General Services and Roland Hwang, Policy Director at the Institute of Transportation Studies. These leaders will share their insights on navigating challenges in today's complex policy landscape. If you're interested in hearing from these panelists, you can see more information and RSVP below.

Fall traditions continue

Last weekend, the Social Committee hosted their annual trip to Apple Hill and it was a success! This tradition encourages students to connect with each other outside of the classroom and enjoy the beauty of fall complete with delicious apple cider and fresh-baked pies!

EPM first-year student and Social Committee's Outdoor Event Coordinator, Grace Curtis stated "It’s wonderful getting to know each other in class, but doing fun outdoor activities together helps us get to know one another not just as students, but as people. It’s amazing what some fresh air and some hot apple cider at Apple Hill can do!”

If you're a current student and weren't able to join the trip to Apple Hill, don't worry- there are plenty more opportunities to get involved. The Social Committee is hosting Board Game Night in a few weeks, perfect for unwinding during the busy quarter. Additionally, the Student Diversity Committee is planning a festive Holiday Potluck to celebrate the diversity of holidays throughout Fall and Winter. This gathering will honor traditions ranging from Diwali to Thanksgiving to Dia De Muertos and more, giving everyone a chance to share their cultures, stories, and favorite dishes with the EPM community.
