EPM welcomes new Faculty Program Chair

The EPM program is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Tyler Scott as the next program chair.

The position of program chair is the academic leader and administrative head of a graduate program. The chair advises program staff, faculty members and students on a wide range of programmatic topics, including policies that affect graduate education, mentorship, student resources, and best practices. The chair works closely with the program director and coordinator to collaboratively manage the day-to-day operations of the program.

Dr. Tyler Scott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Policy as well as the Co-Director of the UCD Center of Environmental Policy and Behavior. Dr. Scott earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Public Policy and Management from the University of Washington. His research focuses on the use of science in decision-making, organizational strategy and innovation, and coordination in complex institutional settings. He teaches several classes including R programming, energy policy, and policy analysis. In response to his appointment as Program Chair, Scott commented

"I'm honored to have this opportunity to serve the EPM community. I intend to work with our leadership team to expand our on- and off-campus programs, diversify our students and staff, and advance our position as the go-to source for environmental professionals in northern California."

Dr. Mark Lubell, a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy and Co-Director for the UCD Center for Environmental Policy and Behavior, will be succeeded by Scott as the EPM Program Chair. Dr. Lubell's research focuses on environmental, agricultural, and public policy cooperation and decision-making. He teaches courses in environmental governance, public lands management, and climate change and water. In 2019, he was appointed as the EPM Program Chair. During his tenure, he expanded EPM's visibility both on and off campus, cultivated EPM's External Advisory Committee, and launched several diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives including institutionalizing EPM's Diversity Committee and expanding admissions resources for historically excluded minority students.  In 2022, Lubell was awarded the Chester Newland Award from the American Society for Public Administration. This award is presented to someone who has demonstrated scholarship and leadership in public administration and has made a noteworthy contribution to the education of public administrators. His dedication to EPM has been critical for the program's current growth and success, and we appreciate his service over the past four years.

Scott's appointment began July 1, 2023 and will continue through 2026.
