Environmental Policy Associate
The Planning and Conservation League (PCL), a statewide nonprofit environmental advocacy organization based in Sacramento, is seeking an Environmental Policy Associate to support its California legislative program. The Policy Associate will join PCL’s work in connecting grassroots organizations and advocating for the protection of California’s lands, air, waters, and communities. This position includes opportunities to transition to long-term full-time employment.
Responsibilities
ADVOCACY
- Participate in environmental “lobby days” involving meetings with legislative staff
- Attend committee hearings on priority bills and voice PCL position where relevant
- Analyze priority legislation and amendments, building strong skills in legal reading and writing
- Assist in preparing and submitting support and opposition letters, bill analyses, and floor alerts
- Gain invaluable working knowledge of and experience with California’s premier environmental laws
COALITION WORK
- Attend and participate in coalition gatherings to discuss legislative strategy, news, and needed actions
- Maintain and build relations with relevant individuals and organizations
- Opportunity for “coffee chats” with staff across a variety of sectors within the legislative and advocacy process
COMMUNICATIONS
- Assist in creating topical and educational social media content on organizational mission, long-term projects, and relevant current events
- Author biweekly posts for the PCL blog
- Assist in drafting and editing monthly Capital Insider newsletters
- Lead communications and outreach efforts ahead of the Planning and Conservation League’s 60th Anniversary Gala in September
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or at least 3 years of post-secondary education towards said degree;
- 1-3 years of experience in environmental science, political science, or related field;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
