Sam Pyros at the City of Chula Vista's Office of Sustainability

I have had the pleasure of working with the City of Chula Vista’s Office of Sustainability for my practicum project. For my project, I have identified a list of Tier 1 and Tier 2 food generators for edible food recovery in preparation for Senate Bill 1383. Currently, I am in the process of creating and providing educational packets for these food generators. These packets are composed of the benefits of employing a food recovery organization, actionable steps that they can take in order to create a beneficial relationship with the city and food recovery organizations, and up-coming community changes surrounding SB 1383 compliance.

Later in my project I will assess Chula Vista’s capacity for food recovery and plan for additional capacity building. This is tied with developing case studies with the Tier 1 and Tier 2 generators in order to ensure they are sending the maximum amount of edible food they would otherwise send to a landfill, as well as integrating gleaning practices into food recovery.
