Bio

Sam received her Bachelors of Science in Biology, with an emphasis in Ecology and Evolutionary Studies from California State University Stanislaus. She received a minor in Economics, and studied International Economics abroad in Poland. During her undergraduate career, she researched protocols for the extraction of microplastics from mole crabs and their cystacanth parasites, and established the best digestion procedure for determining microplastic abundance. While working towards her Associates in Natural Science, Sam received her California Naturalist Certification from assessing the effects of phosphorus on algae growth in different regions of a man-made body of freshwater, as well as studying marine ecology abroad in Baja, Mexico.

Currently, she is the California Resource Recovery Association’s intern, and volunteers for the City of Chula Vista. Her practicum surrounds the preparations for California’s SB 1383 on Tier 1 and Tier 2 food generators on how to recover the maximum amount of edible food. Her interests are in waste reduction, organics recycling, and food insecurity. She is pursuing specializations in City & Regional Planning, along with Climate Change Science & Policy.
