Job Description

SFO’s Sustainability Team works with staff across the airport to incorporate sustainability into airport operations, development, and long-term planning. SFO’s sustainability work centers around five primary areas: Energy, Carbon, Waste, Health, and Water, each with bold 2030 goals as described further in SFO’s 2023 Zero Annual Report and SFO’s Strategic Plan. In order to achieve net zero energy and net zero carbon, SFO actively tracks and aggregates utilities (e.g. water, gas, electricity), greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and advanced energy asset performance data, among other data, in support of a decarbonized future.

The SFO Fellow - Energy and Carbon Analyst will report to the SFO’s Energy Program Manager, through which the Fellow will collect, analyze, and report upon SFO’s campus-wide, solar generation, building and transportation related (airside and landside) utility and performance data to ensure compliance with City, State, and Federal requirements and support campus-wide awareness and prioritization of operational efficiency projects.

 

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identify, scope, and investigate energy performance improvement and carbon reduction opportunities spanning programs, policy, and projects.
  • Collect, clean, and aggregate data through field work, SFO datasets, and publicly available data. Data types include but not limited to: electric vehicle charging, vehicle fuel consumption; vehicle miles traveled, on-site power generation; electricity and natural gas usage; energy savings calculations; grant requirement tracking; energy use intensity.
  • Analyze, interpret, monitor, and summarize findings visually in charts, graphics, and infographics.
  • Write clear and concise descriptions of data, methodology, and results for inclusion in reports, memos, and presentations.
  • Present work through online and in-person presentations to project teams and staff.
  • Facilitate stakeholder meetings; set agendas, create pre-read material, record meeting minutes, and distribute reference collateral for future use.
  • Work independently and in collaboration with staff in Sustainability and other departments to accomplish objectives.
  • Research applicability to SFO of new technologies, local/state/federal laws, grant opportunities, and communicate findings.
  • Support greenhouse gas accounting using Airport Council International’s Airport Carbon Emissions Report Tool (ACERT) and industry best practices for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  • Engage with airlines and other airport tenants to collect Scope 3 emissions data, make recommendations for emissions reductions, and assist in implementation.
  • Assist in additional airport sustainability initiatives as needed such as: capital project stakeholder meetings, waste characterizations and staff trainings, food donation program, Green Business certification and compliance, third-party rating systems reporting, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting, campus tours and outreach events, requests from the public, and website updates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and those outlined in the 9910 Public Service Trainee classification.
