Job Description

The Staten Island Conservation Program Manager is responsible for implementing the island’s Sandhill Crane, Waterfowl and Shorebird monitoring program and coordinating with the Ranch Manager on farm wildlife-friendly management practices and staff. Serving as a liaison and point of contact for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) staff and the general public; highlighting ongoing activities, management at Staten Island, and coordinating TNC internal conservation management meetings and activities. The Program Manager may also work with others to develop recommendations for future management practices and play a role in implementing those recommendations.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Coordinate compatible agriculture projects, Sandhill Crane and Waterbird monitoring.
  • Work with Ranch Manager and staff to track management actions and enhance the habitat value of agricultural fields.
  • Implement Sandhill Crane research and monitoring activities in collaboration with TNC regional science staff.
  • Coordinate citizen scientist volunteers to implement bird monitoring on Staten Island and possibly surrounding farms.
  • Coordinate outside researchers that are contributing to work on Staten Island.
  • Organize and lead TNC Staten Island conservation team meetings.
  • Coordinate management activities for Sandhill Cranes at Staten Island with surrounding private and public landowners, also implementing crane management.
  • Produce an annual report of conservation management activities and monitoring results.
  • Occasionally assist with waterbird surveys in the greater Delta region.
