The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is looking for a talented leader with experience in diplomatic engagement, providing policy advice, coordination and project management to coordinate the global diplomatic outreach effort working towards a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Over the past three years, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative (Treaty Initiative) has grown an extensive network of civil society organisations, academics, scientists, Nobel Laureates, cities and subnational governments, health professionals and faith leaders from around the world calling for new international governance on fossil fuels. This support has galvanised political momentum, with the governments of Vanuatu and Tuvalu now formally calling for a Treaty, following on from endorsements from the European Parliament, President Jose Ramos Horta of Timor Leste and the Climate Minister of New Zealand. In March 2023 six Pacific nations released the Port Vila Call for a Just Transition to a Fossil Fuel Free Pacific, which called for a global just transition from fossil fuels, including through a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and complementary initiatives.
Building on this momentum, the Political Director role will coordinate and oversee the diplomatic engagement and advisory work of the Treaty Initiative to galvanise further political endorsements and aid countries in developing a pathway towards the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
