The Lands Program in the Wildlife Branch seeks candidates for an exciting opportunity to join a team of dedicated wildlife professionals carrying out conservation and management for California's wildlife and their habitats. Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), Wetlands Conservation Program, the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) coordinates with the US Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Grasslands Water District, Wildlife Area (WA) managers and other partners to implement Wetland Water Resources Programs throughout the State. As part of this position the incumbent is responsible for the Departments implementation and coordination of the Central Valley Project Improvement Act's Refuge Water Supply Program, which provides federal Central Valley Project and non-Project water to State, federal, and private managed wetlands in the Central Valley.
The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) also works with conservation partners and Department staff to ensure area managers are kept apprised of issues pertaining to water rights and the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. In addition, this position will work with partners and other Department staff to quantify the wildlife benefits of water delivered to WA’s and develop water use guidance for managers to ensure it's resulting in the desired ecological benefits and is contributing to the goals of the Central Valley Joint Venture and other habitat conservation initiatives. A comprehensive understanding of California's water management and the needs of wetland-dependent wildlife using the region are required.
