Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future (SAHF) is a collaborative of twelve nonprofit affordable housing providers who own more than 150,000 affordable rental homes across the nation. SAHF members are committed to the long-term affordability, sustainability and expansion of rental housing that makes a difference in people’s lives. Our mission is to advance the creation and preservation of healthy, sustainable affordable rental homes that foster equity, opportunity, and wellness for people of limited economic resources. We are looking for a graduate student with a public policy focus to help us put our mission into action. SAHF and its members are a dynamic team focused on learning from and applying on-the-ground experience to systems change and to advancing more effective and equitable federal policy and practice. We collaborate to expand, innovate and scale business and mission opportunities and policy change. SAHF focuses on pursuing innovation where the scale of the collaborative can have unique and substantial impact. The internship is ideally suited for a graduate student to work part-time (preferably 10-12 hours) during January through May 2025, with the potential extension through the Summer. JOB DESCRIPTION This internship will offer a broad range of federal policy experiences as part of SAHF’s policy team. This position will assist with planning and executing legislative advocacy as well as issue specific policy research and development. This position offers the opportunity to deepen experience with legislative advocacy and to gain exposure to affordable housing development issues and partnerships forged by mission driven housing developers. • Support SAHF members’ congressional outreach and engagement, identifying key offices, collaborating in the development of an advocacy strategy and creating collateral on programs and outcomes related to affordable rental housing. • Monitor weekly policy and news developments and synthesize to create weekly digest of federal policy and industry happenings for SAHF members • Support the development of policy position papers and comment letters upon request • Research best practices and policy leadership around housing stability and analyze opportunities for replication and scaling in affordable rental housing. Qualifications: • Personal commitment to the mission and work of SAHF. • Bachelor’s degree with strong academic credentials required. Current graduate student preferred. Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future www.sahfnet.org | contact@sahfnet.org Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future Page 2 • Work experience or demonstrated interest in state or federal policy and/or programs related to affordable housing is required. • Familiarity and or experience with affordable housing programs such as the Section 8 project based rental assistance, Section 202 Housing for the Elderly, Section 811, Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the Resident Services Coordinator grant program preferred. • Self-motivated and disciplined to regularly set and achieve work goals. • Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. • Strong analytic, project management, organization and presentation skills. • Experience communicating policy issues or programmatic concepts to members of different disciplines. • Committed to collaboration and excellent customer service.
