Job Description and Duties
Join the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area team and work in one of the most unique areas of State. The Susiun Marsh is the largest contiguous brackish marsh in the United States. The Grizzly Island Wildlife Area complex is made up of managed and natural tidal wetland habitats totalling over 12,000 acres supporting numerous species of migratory waterfowl, resident populations of Tule elk, wild pigs, and several threatened or endangered species. The Wildlife Habitat Assistant will perform daily wildlife and habitat management and maintenance critical to maintaining habitat on the Wildlife Area.
This includes activities such as:
- Mowing, disking, heavy equipment operation, to maintain ponds, levees, pumps, fish screens and roads.
- Perform building and facility maintenance.
- Conducting water management; water quality control; habitat improvement and restoration projects.
- Directing a field crew in performing daily management activities.
- Developing daily work plans and assisting in development of annual work plan for the Area's benefit and progress.
The Wildlife Habitat Assistant position is an integral part of the team that operates Grizzly Island. Interacting with our hunting public at hunter check stations for waterfowl and elk hunts will be required.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.

Working Conditions
Involves regularly working outside in inclement weather and harsh conditions. Areas include uneven terrain in uplands, flooded ponds, and tidal slough and marsh environments. Requires the ability to operate and drive numerous types of heavy equipment, lift heavy objects, endure long and irregular work hours, work weekends, and ability to change hours of work due to wildlife area activities, hunter check station duties, hunt programs, and other unforeseen issues. Work unusual hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Assist in the retrieval of tule elk during the annual GIWA big game hunt periods.
