California Energy Commission (CEC) is hiring a Virtual Power Plant R&D Specialist to perform complex engineering, statistical, and economic analyses of new energy systems related to demand flexibility. The individual hired in this position will be an Energy Analyst or Electric Generation System Specialist state classification. **Telework option is available, but hired candite must reside in California prior to starting int this position** The CEC Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $300 million annually to advance new scientific approaches and technology innovations to meet the state’s clean energy and climate change policies including but not limited to the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management. The Demand Flexibility Unit supports advancements in load flexibility technologies and strategies for buildings, electric vehicles, and other end uses; virtual power plants; energy efficiency; and decarbonization. Focus areas include predictive controls, consumer interfaces, and communications for the grid integration of demand-side resources. One topic area is virtual power plants, which are networks of distributed energy resources, such as energy-producing or storage devices and load flexible controls, that are pooled together to serve the electricity grid. When pooled, their energy can be tapped by utilities and others during times of high demand and has the potential to reduce California’s net peak demand. Desirable qualifications • Background in demand-side management, distributed energy resources, demand response, energy analytics, and California wholesale electric market programs and proceedings. • Strong research and analytical skills and ability to make well-supported recommendations for planning and decision-making. • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work activities, and deliver high-quality products. • Ability to draft, review, and edit technical information for various audiences. • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
