Sustainability & Environmental Justice Liaison

The Sustainability & Environmental Justice Liaison positions require culturally competent leaders who value and can leverage San Diego region’s racial and cultural diversity to advance the County’s commitment to equitable and inclusive sustainability goals. Liaisons will have the immediate priority to support departments in the implementation of their individual Sustainability Plans and associated commitments in their annual Operational Plans. The Liaisons will work as a collaborative unit, in partnership with the Departmental Sustainability Plans Steering Committee, to assist staff counterparts and champion sustainability throughout the organization. In parallel, the Liaisons will participate in a range of activities that engage with communities disproportionately exposed to environmental burdens to address climate-related issues and provide user-friendly resources to move our region to zero carbon emissions. Key responsibilities for the Sustainability & Environmental Justice Liaisons include: • Administrating, developing, implementing, and evaluating policies and programs pertaining to sustainability and environmental justice in collaboration with other County departments, local and regional agencies, tribes, businesses, industry, labor unions, environmental advocates, and community members across the region • Informing and accelerating an equitable and just transition, applying place-based strategies for the region’s buildings, energy, water, land use and natural systems, food systems, transportation, and circular economy • Developing relationships with all County departments and scaling best practices to help staff understand, actualize, measure, track and manage sustainability efforts established in departments’ Sustainability Plans and Operational Plans • Coordinating meetings and events, presenting to the public, and interacting with stakeholders to ensure all voices are acknowledged and heard when decisions are being made • Working collaboratively and independently as needed to collect substantial and complex data, perform technical analyses, and write reports toward actionable steps that can be taken as a region to reach the County’s visionary decarbonization goals
