As a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) you will have the opportunity to:
Manage, guide, and direct interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers in support of implementing the Safer Consumer Products (SCP) Regulations (California Code of Regulations, title 22, chapter 55)
Oversee review of proposed legislation, development of legislative proposals, and writing of regulation in support of SCP’s mission to protect human health and the environment
Plan, organize, direct, and provide managerial review of the work performed in the External Communication and Environmental Justice Unit, such as:
- Researching the hazards and exposure potential of chemicals used in consumer products
- Evaluating and prioritizing products for possible designation as Priority Products
- Developing regulations
- Developing guidance and criteria for identifying safer alternatives to Chemicals of Concern
- Evaluating Alternatives Analyses submitted by manufacturers of Priority Products
- Evaluating compliance with Priority Product regulations
- Engaging with interested and affected parties
- Liaising with the Office of Communications to issue press releases, answer media inquiries, and post on social media
- Evaluating and expanding the program’s contribution to fostering environmental justice in the External Communication and Environmental Justice Unit to ensure high quality work in support of SCP’s mission
Desirable Qualifications We Look For:
- Experience leading and/or supervising multi-disciplinary teams

- Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication and conflict resolution
- Experience communicating complex scientific concepts to the public
- Experience fostering environmental justice
- Ability to analyze technical and policy issues, evaluate technical work, provide constructive feedback, and make effective decisions
- Ability to support staff and provide opportunities for development and high performance
- Good organizational and project portfolio management skills
