Job Description

he California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Fisheries Branch is seeking motivated candidates for a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) position. This position serves as the subject matter expert and coordinator in efforts to incorporate population genetic and ecological principles into anadromous hatchery practices for the purposes of conservation, mitigation and enhancement of California’s salmon and steelhead fisheries.

As part of Fisheries Branch Fish Production and Distribution Unit, the incumbent provides coordination and expertise for developing and implementing Hatchery Genetic Management Plans (HGMP) throughout the State. The incumbent will work with a diverse group of stakeholders in developing strategies to conserve natural resources affected by hatchery practices and to preserve genetic integrity of natural and hatchery salmonid populations. The incumbent will provide technical expertise to integrate genetic scientific principles into hatchery broodstock collection, spawning, and release strategies to conserve and promote genetic resiliency. The incumbent provides technical expertise and implements genetic tools including parentage-based tagging to meet HGMP objectives and coordinates with a variety of CDFW salmonid monitoring projects to design and implement statewide and regional monitoring plans.

The incumbent will serve on hatchery specific HGMP technical teams evaluating compliance with HGMPs objectives, state and federal Endangered Species Act permit requirements and provide biological assessments of alternative actions to adjust HGMP objectives to mitigate for unanticipated effects Including climate change impacts, thiamine deficiency syndrome, and other stochastic events.
