Job Description

Annual Pay Range at 50% time: $54,000-$61,000 plus benefits for half-time work; option to increase hours after 6 months Open Until Filled. Do you want to take part in important conservation work; do you value biodiversity data? If so, Calflora has an excellent opportunity for a skilled Senior Developer. The anticipated start date for this position is February, 2025. Description: assist in maintaining and developing Calflora’s Java-based website and infrastructure, including systems administration, database management, web application programming, front-end development, and data integration. Must be located in the US. About Calflora: Calflora has been a nonprofit plant database since 2000. It is a unique and comprehensive source of data on California’s wild plants that provides analytical tools and an ability to display geographical plant occurrences. Caflora’s website is a digital library that collects accurate and detailed information from many sources, including herbaria, partner websites, public agencies, non-profits, scientists, and individuals. Calflora is where amateurs and professionals learn about California’s native and non-native wild plants, their distribution, rarity, current taxonomy, and their soil and climate tolerances. For most users, Calflora is an irreplaceable resource for their work and interests. Calflora’s most important and innovative services include detailed distribution maps, What Grows Here?, Weed (Invasive Plant) Manager, and the Planting Guide. Calflora provides many other services, including several developed in collaboration with other organizations. Calflora consists of six staff, including this position, as well as volunteers. We are seeking someone who has the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Qualifications:- - - - Java Databases (MySQL or other) Java-based web technologies (such as GWT) Interest in natural history / botany About our Technology: The Calflora web application backend is Java servlet-based, and our front-end is using Google Web Toolkit (GWT), currently version 2.9. Our data is stored in a MySQL database. The system is running on Linux servers. We also have a separate reporting site using JasperSoft JasperReports, and a customer-facing API server using Javalin. Work Environment: Must be located in the US. Zero days in the office are required; the Calflora office is in downtown Berkeley if you would like to work from there. This position would start at twenty hours per week and could increase to full-time. This position reports to the Executive Director.
