CA Department of Fish and Wildlife
Job Description
The Aquatic Bioassessment Lab is seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill multiple positions for their 2025 field teams. Biological assessment (bioassessment) is an evaluation of the condition of a waterbody based on the organisms living within it. Scientists use this approach to directly and quantitatively measure the ecological health of a waterbody and to monitor the cumulative impacts of environmental stressors on surface waters.
Hired individuals will assist Environmental Scientists in trip preparation and logistics, sample collection (benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, algae, and water), data collection, and data entry. Daily activities will include using four-wheel drive vehicles, hiking on rough terrain to access remote locations, and wading in streams throughout California. Overnight travel will be required each week with expenses reimbursed by the State.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find this position exciting and rewarding! These positions offer the opportunity to see and explore California’s various landscapes while gaining valuable field experience in:
• the use of biological tools and instruments
• standard operating procedures
• plant identification
• field safety and navigation
