The Policy Intern (intern) will work closely with the Policy team, regional directors and
regional staff to provide internal policy support to CalTrout staff and assist in state-level
political engagement. The intern will be responsible for two projects (detailed below) in
consultation with the supervising members of the Policy Team. The intern will be expected to engage with the appropriate staff and partners to complete their projects, and will also be expected to present their work to CalTrout staff at the conclusion of their internship.
The intern will learn the basic skills of state lobbying, non-profit advocacy and will
develop their communicative and strategic abilities by shadowing the Policy Associate and
other members and partners of the Policy Team. The intern will also witness firsthand how a bill is moved through the state legislature and will witness the formation of the state budget as they engage with the Policy Team on these items. The intern will practice these skills when engaging with the legislature and agency staff by attending scheduled meetings, attending drop-in visits, and registering brief support or opposition in legislative committee hearings. They will also connect with CalTrout partners and outside organizations as they learn to engage on policy issues.
