About Us:

California Trout (www.caltrout.org), a 50-year-old environmental non-profit and one of the largest freshwater conservation organizations in the state, seeks a dedicated Bay Area Outreach and Engagement Coordinator to join our team. California Trout’s mission is to ensure healthy waters and resilient wild fish for a better California.

Position Summary:

The Bay Area Outreach and Engagement Coordinator is a collaborative position with wide-reaching team overlap. The Coordinator will report to the Outreach and Education Manager, with larger oversight from both the Development & Communications Directors, as well as Bay Area Regional Director to bring the Bay Area engagement priorities to fruition.

The Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of CalTrout’s Bay Area outreach events, outreach messaging, and for the coordination and implementation of hands-on volunteer events that give our Greater Bay Area community the opportunity to engage with CalTrout’s work. The goal of California Trout’s outreach and engagement efforts are to create opportunities for hands-on and virtual engagement and learning to build commitment through action, with the outcome of broadening CalTrout’s reach.

This role is unique in that one of its main functions is to engage the Bay Area community in California Trout’s work – occasional weekend and evening work will correspond with events as needed, and the Bay Area Outreach and Engagement Specialist will ideally spend a significant amount of time meeting with partners, organizing and attending events. This role requires frequent local travel within the Greater Bay Area.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with other conservation and community organizations in the Bay Area with the specific goal of building CalTrout’s community, elevating our work, and creating opportunities for hands-on engagement for our larger community
  • Manage the coordination, promotion, and implementation of in-person outreach and engagement events to the larger community including International Fly Fishing Film Festival screenings, the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show, and hands-on volunteer and engagement events
  • Maintain database of Bay Area partner organizations, fly clubs, fly shops, influencers/bloggers, and other relevant outlets to amplify CalTrout messaging and campaigns in the Bay Area
  • Support the build out of volunteer processes for Bay Area outreach programs/events including managing and training volunteers
  • Collaborate with the communications team and CalTrout designer to co-conceptualize salient outreach materials that will contribute to organizational outreach and education efforts.
  • Collaborate with new and existing Bay Area partners to promote shared projects and engagement opportunities through earned media, blog posts, social media, interpretive signs, etc.
  • Collaborate closely with the communications team to develop and contribute content highlighting youth and community events and voices for CalTrout’s communication channels
  • Track, monitor, and analyze all outreach and engagement efforts to determine effectiveness – post-event surveys, social media engagement, event attendance, etc.
  • Support bi-yearly education and engagement opportunities for CalTrout Bay Area staff

Education, Skills, and Experience:

We understand that stated requirements can, and have, often deter skilled applicants who may be very aligned with the role despite not meeting every qualification. We encourage you to apply even if you do meet every qualification stated!

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of related outreach/engagement experience OR equivalent life and professional experience
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex conservation issues and California Trout’s mission and goals to a wide range of audiences
  • Organizational skills to track and manage multiple projects
  • Some familiarity with California ecology/water politics/fisheries
  • Passion for and commitment to California’s water, people, and fish
  • Rootedness in the Bay Area region
  • Critical thinker with a high capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively

  • Experience with WordPress, SEO and social media outreach, Microsoft Office competency
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record

This is an excellent opportunity for an early career, dynamic individual to contribute, learn and grow as part of a growing CalTrout team.  As such, you will be part of a passionate group in an energized and exciting atmosphere working at the forefront of restoration and advocacy in California.
