Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists with cone collection, seed processing, and laboratory work:
- This consists of cone sampling, working in a physically demanding environment, in rough/uneven terrain, with harsh weather to collect cones.
- Performs cone cutting tests, turning cone sacks, preparation of cones for drying via solar or kiln drying, tumbling cones for seed extraction, and spent cone handling.
- Processes seed to include screening, dewinging, upgrading with air separation equipment, hand cleaning, and other methods as required for all species at the Center.
- Operates equipment associated with cone and seed processing including forklift, tumbler, kiln, dewinger, screen machines, x-ray and monitor, air separators, balances, bander, air compressors, generators, and other equipment.
- Conducts monitoring and keeps detailed records of cone and seed processes to include measuring seed moisture content, drying of seeds, seed per pound calculations, purity percentages, calculating germination percentages, and preparing seeds for long term storage and or/shipping.
- Provides direction to crews from the California Conservation Corps and/or Conservation camps as needed for seed processing activities.
- Assists with nursery and facility operations: *This consists of seed stratification, sowing, irrigation, germination counts, moving seedlings from greenhouses to shadehouses, seedling thinning, equipment maintenance and sanitization, data entry and quality control, seedling lifting and assisting customers with seedling pick up.
- Contributes to upkeep of seed orchard, landscaping, and facility and grounds maintenance as needed.
- Provides direction to crews from the California Conservation Corps and/or Conservation camps as needed for nursery activities.
Other job-related duties as required. *These may include emergency-related assignments.
