California is in a new era of intense climate hazards and acute housing shortages. Communities across the state are struggling with how to keep people safe and ecosystems thriving. Solano County is specifically facing skyrocketing housing costs while trying to protect communities from extreme heat and flood impacts. These climate and housing-related impacts are disproportionately felt by low-income, immigrant communities and communities of color.
At Greenbelt Alliance, we’ve been hard at work for over 60 years protecting the Bay Area’s natural and working lands and encouraging city-centered growth, resulting in nearly 3.3 million acres protected. To solve the complex challenges of today, Greenbelt Alliance is focusing our efforts to educate, advocate and collaborate on conservation and land use policy for a climate-resilient Bay Area. We’re doing this by drawing on equitable nature-based solutions to ensure our most vulnerable communities thrive in a changing climate with climate-smart housing availability for everyone.
Fairfield and Suisun are neighboring cities whose actions, policies, resources, and communities are deeply intertwined and interdependent, particularly related to equitable access to open space, climate justice, and protecting and stewarding water resources. Findings from the Suisun Community Resilience Building Workshop in 2022 state there is a lack of public forums and dialogue, resident awareness and knowledge about climate impacts, climate resilience solutions, and climate justice, which has led to slow progress in establishing plans and implementing actions to meaningfully address resilience and Estuary stewardship. Greenbelt Alliance and Sustainable Solano are partnering to support creation of The Climate Learning Exchange & Training Program, a 9-month course including guest speakers, skill building workshops, field trips, outreach, and project development to prepare participants for understanding interconnected climate challenges, how planning and policy development works, and come away feeling empowered that they can be part of creating local solutions as climate champions and leaders.
We are hiring for a Leadership Development Coordinator to consult with experts and partners to design and implement the curriculum of the Fairfield-Suisun Climate Learning Exchange & Training Program. This program will prepare approximately 25 local residents (including youth) with the tools, experience, and resources necessary to understand interconnected climate challenges, how planning and policy development works, and come away feeling empowered to support the creation of local climate solutions. This flexible, part-time, role will be responsible for creating original curriculum with input from experts and partners, supporting in program outreach, and planning and executing trainings and meetings. This is an EPA grant-funded position that requires attention to detail, collaboration with partners and the public, and project management skills.
