Job Description

Transition Habitat Conservancy (THC) is seeking a Land Stewardship Specialist to support on-the-ground conservation and land management efforts within the Mojave Desert. This is a field-based position that involves significant time spent driving on 4WD dirt roads, hiking across uneven desert terrain, and camping in remote areas. The specialist will work directly with THC Biologists and/or stewardship staff.

Applicants should reside in Victorville, Barstow, or other nearby High Desert communities. Periodic travel to Piñon Hills is required for staff meetings and coordination.

This position does offer the opportunity to grow into other tasks or positions within THC, but is described as the following:

Primary tasks:

• Assist with monitoring and stewardship of approximately 22,000 acres of CDFW lands
• Patrol and monitor restoration sites and management polygons
• Meet and assist BLM and contractors in the field
• Support oversight of restoration crews (AmeriCorps, SCA, CCC, or other hired crew)
• Collect field data using iPad, camera, and GPS
• Conduct desert restoration on closed OHV routes
• Assist with Desert Tortoise transect monitoring with THC biologist
• Attend monthly land management meetings and report regular updates to the Land Manager

Additional tasks may include:

• Compile monitoring reports
• GIS computer work
• Maintaining stewardship task spreadsheet

Desired Skills:

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and strong 4WD experience (Background checks required for final candidates)
• Positive attitude, strong communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively with THC team
• Flexible schedule and willingness to work variable hours, including early mornings and weekends
• Comfort with camping and working outdoors in remote desert environments. Must be able to hike 2-5 miles over uneven terrain.
