At the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve - a partnership between NOAA and Oregon Department of State Lands – interns are exposed to both an Oregon State office and a protected reserve environment with a host of learning opportunities. The Estuary Monitoring and GIS Intern will support South Slough Reserve’s Science Program and be based out of the Estuarine and Coastal Science Lab on the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology campus (University of Oregon’s marine station).
The intern will assist with conducting research to understand effectiveness of stage zero restoration. The intern will work closely with Reserve science staff to collect UAV and RTK measurements at multiple sites within the reserve.
The other half of the intern’s time will be spent assisting with the South Slough’s GIS Specialist where the intern will gain experience in outdoor GIS/GPS work, use of GIS in environmental science, UAV mapping and analysis, and communication skills. By working alongside science staff, the intern will gain specific experience in:
• GPS – including Real Time Kinematic (RTK) data collection
• GIS software
• UAV mapping and data analysis
• Leveling elevation surveys
• Post-processing of GPS data
