Under supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), position will provide core program support to the Avian Health and Pesticide investigations program. Position will assist with necropsies and live animal processing; processing serological tests; fecal analyses, and diagnostic analyses (e.g. tissue/blood smear staining). Assist with biological sample collection; field investigation of reported mortality events (e.g. highly pathogenic avian influenza, West Nile virus, botulism); and statewide disease surveillance efforts in affected species. Position will also provide overall WHL lab support that includes assisting with the care of live animals temporarily held at the WHL animal holding facility; transport of samples, equipment, carcasses and live animals; and routine maintenance, cleaning, restocking, and organization of WHL facilities, equipment, and vehicles. The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day and involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Occasional meetings at Sacramento-area offices required. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Branch and Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via email and telephone. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions. Ability to work outdoors in remote areas with uneven terrain. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items (up to 40 lbs.). Ability to drive for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours). Position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.
