The Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is hiring an Environmental Scientist to help advance our strategic priorities related to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The Environmental Scientist will work in our Biodiversity Program and will lead efforts related to MPA management in California, including outreach and education, research and monitoring, enforcement and compliance, and policy and permitting. The Environmental Scientist will collaborate with other OPC staff, state and federal agencies, California Native American tribes, academic scientists, non-profits, and others to ensure effective, equitable MPA management, including by implementing key recommendations from the recent MPA Decadal Management Review. The Environmental Scientist will work with agency partners, academic researchers, tribes, and community science groups to develop and implement statewide MPA monitoring projects to inform MPA performance evaluation and adaptive management. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for grant and contract management, including developing scopes of work and budgets, tracking deliverables, and coordinating with grantees/contractors. Finally, the Environmental Scientist will provide additional support and capacity for implementation of broader OPC and California Natural Resources Agency priorities related to biodiversity conservation, such as habitat protection and restoration, and will support embedding equity and environmental justice into programs and actions.
