The DFT Internship Program leverages growing excitement among students across the country about sustainability, urbanism, public transportation, and public service. The Washington Center coordinates this program in partnership with FTA.
FTA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) which administers funding for locally planned and operated public transportation systems throughout the United States. The DFT Internship Program helps deliver on the FTA’s diversity and inclusion strategies for its future workforce while providing space for learners to network, strengthen their skills, and build impact in the field. DFT will be held in-person at FTA offices in Washington, D.C. and across the country from June 3-August 9, 2024.
DFT internships offer a substantial stipend, paid housing and travel for students who need it, substantive project-based work, mentorship from federal staff, and professional development programming. There is no fee for students to apply or participate. The internships are open to enrolled students in all academic areas and can include technical, research, communications, and administrative projects. Applications are due February 18, 2024.
Undergraduate, graduate, and law students from groups under-represented in the federal transit field, including students of color, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, women in STEM, and LGBTQ+ students, are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US citizens (dual citizens are not eligible).
This program is separate from the long-running USDOT/Washington Center Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG), which places interns across sectors of USDOT focused on highways, railroads, hazardous materials, maritime issues, archival management, and other areas. Students are welcome to apply for STIPDG (only through January 31, 2024), FTA DFT, or both programs. Graduate-level applicants are especially welcome as some roles may require substantial academic experience. Students can also read more about The Washington Center’s paid diversity internship programs at other federal agencies, including a lab science program at the Naval Research Laboratory.
