About the Role

At Re:wild, we’ve spent the past five years building and managing a dynamic conservation data system using Airtable and ArcGIS Online. As our global impact has expanded, so too has the scale and complexity of our data—creating exciting opportunities for innovation, problem-solving, and meaningful contribution to conservation efforts worldwide. 

The Priorities and Monitoring Team works to maintain Re:wild's strategic focus on the highest-priority places and species and reinforce our organizational identity. We ensure that the organization is able to demonstrate impact at scale while remaining transparent in communicating data and maintaining mission integrity.

The Conservation Data Specialist will join our Priorities & Monitoring team and will play an instrumental role in refining and improving how we track, report and visualize our conservation impact.

The Conservation Data Specialist is a person who has deep technical skills but who can also effectively work across teams—particularly with our conservation programs, and communications teams—to manage data related to our species, site, and landscape conservation work (both spatial and tabular), build automated systems, and ensure that our systems are accurate, accessible, and useful.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage colleagues in regional and thematic programs to ensure conservation data are complete and up to date.
  • Collate, clean, analyze, and manage species, site, and landscape data (both tabular and spatial).
  • Ensure high data quality, consistency, and completeness across data systems.
  • Develop models and scripts to automate updates to data in Airtable and ArcGIS, including automating calculations and reporting for all  impact metrics at various scales (e.g. national, regional, global).
  • Support spatial analysis and mapping efforts
  • Assist with improvements to the design, functionality, and user experience of Re:wild’s internal and external mapping and reporting tools.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications team on StoryMaps that highlight Re:wild’s impact.
  • Build out and maintain an ArcGIS Online portal as a core repository for datasets, StoryMaps, and applications.
  • Lead rollout of Online Mapping Tools to staff and assess their utility for enhancing monitoring of Re:wild sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Data Science, Environmental Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of ArcGIS, including the ability to manage online feature services, create web maps and storymaps, perform spatial analyses, and create automations for repetitive tasks
  • Comfort in designing and managing Airtable databases for managing and reporting on shared organizational data, including design of interfaces and creation of automations
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or a similar scripting language for data automation.
  • Strong understanding of data management principles, quality control, and visualization.
  • Ability to communicate complex data in a clear, compelling way.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a global, remote team.
  • Ability to undertake occasional international travel and work across time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in conservation or biodiversity data systems.
  • Familiarity with Sustainable Development Goals and Global Biodiversity Targets.
  • Experience working in multicultural and multilingual environments.

Compensation and Benefits

  • This is a full-time, exempt, fixed-term position for a period of 24 months. Employment may be extended by mutual agreement of the parties based on project needs,performance, and funding availability..
  • Projected salary range of $65,000-85,000 with the final determination to be made commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
  • Re:wild provides medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance, with Re:wild covering up to 68-100% of the premiums. Re:wild also offers a 403b retirement plan with up to 3% match after a year of employment.
  • Re:wild observes 16 paid holidays each calendar year. Full-time employees can also accrue the following annually: up to 15 days of vacation leave, 12 days of illness leave and 2 volunteer days.
  • Hours: The position may occasionally require working outside of normal business hours to engage with staff located in different time zones around the world.
