Job Description
California State Parks is responsible for the development and stewardship of the state’s most treasured biological and cultural resources housed in 280 state park units statewide. The Strategic Planning and Recreation Services Division is responsible for long-range planning and delivery of recreational services statewide.The Strategic Planning and Recreation Services Division (SPRSD) provides valuable planning assistance to California State Parks and other park and recreation providers by collecting information, research, and analysis on recreation opportunities, park resources, and public preferences; collaborating with others to plan for California’s state parks and other outdoor recreation areas; and communicating recreation and park needs and opportunities to agency leaders, park and recreation professionals, other public officials, and the public. The Recreation Planning Unit addresses the issues, problems, and opportunities that affect the state park system and reports statistics regarding public use, facilities, and operations at state parks.SPRSD is currently seeking a Climate Intern to advance climate planning. The intern will have the unique opportunity to work with California State Parks leadership, scientists, and planners to shape how climate change is considered in future state park planning and stewardship efforts. The intern will provide scientific expertise and assistance to the Department’s planning function, Natural Resource Division, Districts, Service Centers, and other Divisions to address technical, analytical, planning and/or regulatory work specific to climate adaptation/mitigation strategies.The Climate Intern will support the coordination of a multidisciplinary Climate Change Working Group within California State Parks and assist in the development of statewide guidelines, frameworks, and resources for integrating climate considerations into State Parks planning documents. The internship is hybrid and will require both remote and in-person work at California State Parks headquarters in downtown Sacramento (715 P Street, 14th floor).Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.Interns generally work up to 24 hours per workweek during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Minimum Qualifications
B.A./B.S. with focus in environmental studies/science/policy, natural resource management/conservation, ecology, biology, geology/earth science, planning, landscape architecture, or closely related field. Advanced degree a plus, but not required.Working knowledge or interest in climate change science and policy, with a focus on California ecosystems, principles of climate change, sustainability, adaptation, equity, and resiliency.Working knowledge or interest in public lands management, including such issues as wildlife management, facilities planning, cultural and natural resource stewardship, and climate adaptation planning.Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate climate science in an accessible manner and effectively engage, interact, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.Excellent organizational skills and an ability to work concurrently on multiple projects and manage deadlines independently. Ability to develop clear and concise reports and recommendations. Ability to work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people. A passion for California State Parks.Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and virtual communication and productivity tools.Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Assistance (50%)
· Researches and synthesizes current planning guidance relevant to addressing the impacts of climate change in State Parks and from other land management agencies.
· Assists in development of statewide State Parks-specific planning frameworks and decision-support tools related to climate change impacts and adaptation planning.
· Tracks and assimilates multiple planning processes occurring at different scales with the park systems and captures learnings from local park-level efforts that meet statewide needs
Program Coordination (50%)
· Provides coordination assistance to cross-functional State Parks working group to collaboratively develop materials for draft Park Planning documents, including narratives, maps, and other written or visual materials.
· Provides scientific expertise in resource management issues to assist the Department’s planning function with the preparation of climate planning guidance documents.
· Organizes and participates in relevant meetings related to climate change impacts and planning, emerging scientific and management issues, and adaptation strategies.
