Civic Science Fellow

Open Environmental Data
Job Description
  • Contribute to the small/local AI documentation series, translating a fast-moving, fragmented technical landscape into clear, engaging writing for both technical and community audiences.
  • Work with our team that leads our DIGITCORE and Data Stewardship work to develop practical participatory governance and evaluation frameworks for community AI (drawing on principles such as CARE and FAIR): who decides whether a model should exist, what belongs in training data, how to handle consent, and how to assess whether a tool serves a community.
  • Support the team in piloting a demonstration build, working alongside a community partner and others to prototype what “small-AI” looks like in practice, including documenting the full process and producing a reusable design-and-implementation framework.
  • Prototype and experiment hands-on with small models and accessible hardware to inform both the writing and the build.
  • Contribute to OEDP's broader AI resources (Community Data Playbook: AI Edition, DIGITCORE).
  • Participate fully in the Civic Science Fellows cohort, bringing learnings back to OEDP and our network.
