Job Description

We are hiring an early-career Biologist to work on a variety of exciting projects throughout Northern and Central California. The successful applicant will support survey efforts for rare and invasive plants, vegetation mapping, and wetland and stream delineations. Your work will take you from coastal salt marshes of the San Francisco Bay and coast, to the grasslands and vernal pools of the Central Valley, all the way to the Sierra Nevada mountains. We are particularly interested in individuals with some terrestrial invertebrate and/or pollinator ecology experience, who are excited to learn how to conduct surveys for protected bees and butterflies, and pollinator habitat assessments.

Your work at WRA will support a variety of projects, including restoration, development, and open space to name a few. As an early-professional biologist, we are looking for someone who is motivated, intelligent, and eager to learn from our current team of experienced professionals. Are you looking to encounter some of the rarest plants and insects in the continental United States? Are you willing to travel throughout Central California, and would you like to get paid to hike and camp in scenic places? Do you want to grow your career as a professional consultant with a company full of individuals at the top of their field, who are passionate about cultivating a sustainable future? If so, apply to  join our team!

This role will need to be within commuting distance to one of our 3 Northern California offices (San Rafael, Petaluma, and Emeryville), as frequent site visits will be necessary.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct site visits independently or with WRA field leads to assess and map existing conditions. These site visits could occur in rural or urban locations
  • Evaluate project sites for jurisdictional streams and wetlands as well as habitat for special-status species
  • Collaborate closely with WRA’s senior regulatory permitting specialists and CEQA/NEPA planners to develop environmental scopes of work and budgets
  • Collaborate with other technical staff (e.g., biologists, wetland delineators, arborists, GIS specialists) and sub-consultants (e.g., archaeologists, historians) in the completion of technical studies (desktop or field-based)
  • Work with engineers to review their designs to help avoid and minimize impacts to regulated aquatic resources and other sensitive areas
  • Prepare environmental permit applications and technical documents to support inter-agency consultations (e.g., Section 7 of the Federal Endangered Species Act)
  • Prepare letters, reports, and/or memorandums, with oversight and guidance from senior team members, which may include detailing results of surveys or assessments
  • Occasionally take on assignments in support of other WRA project needs and to meet your billable hours target, such as compliance monitoring during construction, fish salvages and relocation, and other field surveys that align with your interests and skills
