Job Description

Land IQ, LLC is seeking an Agricultural Field and GIS Technician based out of Sacramento, California office to assist with our agricultural science field data collection and geospatial sciences programs. This position will consist of half-time centered around our evapotranspiration (ET) work, and the other half centered around GIS tasks.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working with both our agronomic and GIS teams to provide field and geospatial analysis support as needed. Field support will include maintaining equipment used to quantify ET rates for a variety of agricultural crops and fallow systems. GIS support will include working with our growing geospatial and land-based sciences team comprised of remote sensing/GIS experts and a range of agronomic, environmental, and science disciplines. Applicants must have strong analytical reasoning skills including some basic exposure to GIS, natural resources disciplines, and field data collection experience. Knowledge of field based experimental design and construction, and/or instrument maintenance and monitoring is a plus. Land IQ will work collaboratively with this individual to train them on needed work elements.

This environmental consulting position requires the ability to work independently on maintaining, troubleshooting, and fixing field equipment in agricultural settings. The applicant must have strong communication skills, be able to follow instructions and report observations, readily work in a team environment, and use efficient work approaches. The position will involve traveling to field sites, implementing instructions, and communicating with team members. GIS work for the position will be highly centered on GIS work products, efficient data management, and some spatial interpretation of image resources. Some occasional multi-day travel within the state of California will be required.

Employment Type:   Full time, including benefits

Salary/Pay:   $65,000 - $85,000 annually, depending on experience

Transportation:   Position includes availability of a work truck for field work

Primary Responsibilities:  

  • Maintain and troubleshoot meteorological and soil field equipment
  • Work with the Land IQ ET Team on occasional station builds, dismantles and relocations
  • Take detailed notes and communicate with Land IQ Team members
  • Work in a team environment on a wide range of projects, supporting our team of GIS analysts
  • Develop unique spatial solutions to address a wide range of complex agriculture and environmental challenges
  • Develop and refine existing applications, geospatial analysis protocols, and spatial and statistical modeling applications to help solve complex environmental and agricultural resource problems

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: BS/MS degree in a Natural Resources discipline or GIS focus area
  • Experience: 0-2 years
  • Valid CA driver’s license
  • Comfortable climbing scaffolding with safety harness up to 45 feet
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours, occasionally remaining away from home for 1 week at a time
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, responsive, collaborative, and the ability to take directions
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Basic understanding of geospatial challenges and analysis
  • Experience with ESRI’s software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Experience Builder)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to native and/or agricultural land-based sciences
  • Experience with meteorological and soil instrumentation
  • Elementary knowledge of electronic equipment (i.e., dataloggers, solar power systems, etc.)
  • Basic mechanical and construction skills
  • Experience in GIS data editing, GIS map production, and spatial database management
  • Experience managing GIS data workflows and data collection methods
  • Experience with standard and advanced spatial analysis tasks/geoprocessing
  • Experience with raster imagery products and basic raster analysis
